fall 2022
editor's note
Dear Reader,
What does it mean to face the fire? How do we understand heat as both action and reaction? What separates a body from its smoke?
This issue, we are both humbled and emboldened by change: what it means to stoke, create, and welcome it. We can't wait to introduce you to the latest issue of Gaia Lit, featuring the poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and artwork of twenty-two inspiring change-makers. The theme for our issue was drought; we encouraged potential contributors to research key terms and issues for inspiration and to raise awareness, including but not limited to heat-trapping greenhouse gases, crop fire, and megadroughts.
Alongside this issue, with generous support and guidance from both the Davidson Institute and the Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs, we are incredibly excited to announce Project Gaia, an anthology of creative works dedicated to the climate crisis, composed of art and literature encompassing Gaia's history, as well as its future. We cannot wait to see you there.
Until then, happy reading—and happy creating. A huge thank you to our readers, our staff, our submitters, our contributors, and you, for making Gaia more than possible. As always, we hope you stay.
Best wishes,
Elane Kim
Editor-in-Chief of Gaia Lit
